DEVLog - September

September was my biggest month on GitHub so far: about 1,900 commits across 12 repositories. Almost all of it had one theme. AI agents should be able to use the things I build.

I wrote this devlog later, from my GitHub history, to fill a gap in the series.

SignatureAPI for coding agents

SignatureAPI got 677 commits from me, my biggest month there too. Many developers now write code with AI agents like Claude Code, Codex or Cursor. If the agent does not know SignatureAPI well, the developer gets broken code. So I worked on several fronts at once.

Public agent skills

I created a new public repository, signatureapi/skills. A skill is a set of instructions that teaches an AI agent how to do one job well. There are four skills: one to integrate SignatureAPI, one to plan the architecture of a signing flow, one to navigate the docs, and one to diagnose a broken integration.

I also taught the skills the integration mistakes our support team saw most often. The plugin also checks that everything is ready when a session starts in Claude Code, Codex or Cursor. I shipped versions 1.1.0 and 1.3.0 this month.

The MCP server goes public

Our MCP server, the one that lets AI assistants send envelopes, is now listed in the official MCP Registry and on Glama. Those are directories where people look for MCP servers.

I also worked on a command line tool for SignatureAPI. It has commands to log in and check who you are, and it offers to set up 11 different coding agents for you.

Demos and a website for agents

I published a mobile demo that shows embedded signing in native iOS (SwiftUI), Android (Jetpack Compose) and React Native. I also finished the web demo, with the page, a server, tests and a guide.

The website got a set of files that help agents find their way: an AGENTS.md file, an API catalog that follows RFC 9727, and an MCP Server Card. I also added a news section about electronic signatures, with stories going back to 2023.

StepCode v2

StepCode is a simple programming language with its own web editor, and the editor speaks Spanish. This month it got 311 commits and a full version 2.

The editor now uses TextMate grammars, the same system many code editors use to color code. There is a compact editor you can embed in any page at /embed, with a tab to copy the embed code and see a live preview. StepCode also moved to a new address, stepcode.letsbuildsolutions.com, and the old stepcode.online address now redirects there. I even made a vertical promo video in Spanish for the launch.

Schools meet AI assistants

ParentSignature for Schools got 652 commits, almost as many as SignatureAPI. The big feature was AI assistant access through MCP. An assistant connects with a token, and the token also limits what it can do. Once connected, an assistant can:

  1. Find families in the roster.
  2. Preview a send, and then make it.
  3. Answer who has not signed yet.
  4. Get the signed copies.

The audit trail now records which client made each change, so a school can always see whether a person or an assistant did something.

Looking ahead

  • SignatureAPI: open qualified signatures as a private beta.
  • ParentSignature for Schools: get ready for launch.

Thank you for reading. If you use an AI coding agent, try the SignatureAPI skills and tell me what breaks!
