The Day I Became a Firefighter

The Day I Became a Firefighter

It's so Rolando

They say if you leave a fire alone for a minute, it becomes uncontrollable. One night, I tested that theory and accidentally became a firefighter đźš’

It was 2019, during one of Venezuela’s massive blackouts. My mom had lit candles everywhere to keep the darkness at bay. My sister and I were in the living room when BOOM—a loud explosion from our parents’ room.

We rushed in. The nightstand was engulfed in flames, and the fire was spreading fast.

I yelled at my sister to find the extinguisher while screaming “FIRE! FIRE!” But as I watched the flames lick the ceiling, I realized we were on our own. No time to wait. I had to act. 🧯

I scanned the room. My eyes landed on a thick sheet on the bed. Without a second thought (and probably against all safety protocols), I grabbed it and threw it over the fire. I smothered the flames, depriving them of oxygen. It was chaotic, but it worked. The fire died. 👨‍🚒

“We’re safe!” I told my sister, feeling like a hero. Then I looked up. The walls and ceiling were charred black. The room looked like a scene from a disaster movie. 💀

Lesson learned: Respect candles. And never underestimate the firefighting power of a good, thick sheet. 🛏️
